Fundatia New Life , Amara, Romania
In the communist era, families in Romania were encouraged to have at least five children in order to build a strong workforce in the country. Many parents could not support their children and handicapped children in particular were sent to orphanages and lost contact with their families. Now the institutions are closing and the children have to return to the county of their birth. They are resented by the families who are too poor to keep them, and many run away and end up on the streets.

‘Fundatia New Life’ is a small charity in Romania which cares for seven handicapped youngsters who live in a house specially purchased for them in the village of Amara, near Slobozia, east of the capital Bucharest.

Since the boys arrived at Amara House, they have become very different from the boys they were in the grim, state institution. They enjoy good food, correct medication and stimulating activities and follow suitable programmes to develop their potential. They have gained confidence and are happy and relaxed because for the first time in their lives they feel secure and loved. They are cared for by Romanian staff and have become part of local village life. There are plans now to enlarge the house to give them more room and more bathrooms.

It costs £1000 per month to run Amara House so our money really will make a difference.
